RFID Overview: RFID or Radio Frequency Identification is a generic term used to describe a system that transmits the identity (in the form of a unique serial number) of any object wirelessly, using radio waves. RFID is a form of AutoID (automatic identification), relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags, RF Tags or RF Transponders.

Active Tags

Active RFID systems use battery powered RFID tags. They continuously broadcast their signal. Active tags provide a longer read range than passive tags, but they are also much more expensive. Typically, active RFID tags are powered by a long life battery that will last a few years.

Passive Tags

A passive tag is an RFID tag that does not contain a battery. The tag is "illuminated" by the reader. Passive RFID tags are used for applications such as access control, file tracking, race timing, supply chain management, etc. Passive tags are cheaper than Active tags.
